This tray is uniquely sewn to display the sweetgrass on the exterior of the bodice while showcasing the pine needles on the interior.  The basket maker is able to create this dual effect by splitting the sweetgrass and pine needles and sewing both materials at the same time.  The piece is finished with twists that are anchored to the basket every few stitches.
 
Materials:  Long leaf pine needles, bulrush, and strips of palmetto fronds (palm leaves)
